Why "Being the Best" is Killing Your Business (and How to Actually Stand Out)

Let’s be real for a second. Most business owners are walking around with a massive blind spot that is costing them thousands, if not millions, of dollars in lost revenue. They think they’re winning because they have "great service" or "the best product in town."

I’m here to tell you that nobody cares.

In fact, if you’re still telling people you’re "the best," you’re actively killing your business. You’re blending into the background noise like a beige wall in a beige room. You’re becoming a commodity. And in the world of business, being a commodity is a death sentence.

The "Me-Too" Epidemic

Go to your website right now. Look at your "About Us" page. Now, look at your top three competitors. I’ll bet my last dollar that you all say the same thing:

  • "We provide the highest quality service."

  • "Our staff is highly trained."

  • "We’ve been in business for X years."

  • "We treat our customers like family."

Why should someone do business with you? Because you are the best? THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE SAYS!

When you say you’re "the best," you’re not making a claim; you’re making a noise. It’s static. It’s white noise that the consumer’s brain is trained to filter out immediately. If everyone is "the best," then by definition, nobody is.

If I removed your logo from your website and put your competitor's logo there instead, would anyone even notice a difference? If the answer is "no," you don’t have a business; you have a "me-too" operation that is forced to compete on the one thing that will eventually bankrupt you: Price.

The Logo Swap Test

This is the ultimate reality check. I call it the Logo Swap Test. If you can take your marketing materials, your brochures, your website, your Facebook ads, and swap your name for the guy down the street without changing a single word of the copy, you are a commodity.

Commodities are bought on price. Think about gasoline. Do you care which station you go to? Probably not. You look at the big sign with the numbers and you go to the one that is two cents cheaper. Is that how you want to be treated? Do you want your potential clients to view you as a utility that can be replaced by anyone willing to shave five bucks off the invoice?

Of course not. But that’s exactly what happens when you fail to establish a Market Dominating Position (MDP).

What is a Market Dominating Position (MDP)?

An MDP is not a slogan. It’s not a catchy jingle. It is a fundamental, strategic position that makes you the only logical choice for your target market. It’s about standing out so vividly that your competition becomes completely irrelevant.

Think about Domino’s Pizza in the early days. They didn’t say, "We have the best ingredients" or "Our dough is hand-tossed by Italian grandmothers." They said: "Fresh, hot pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less or it's free."

That is an MDP. They didn’t claim to be the best-tasting pizza. They claimed to be the fastest delivery service. They identified a specific pain point (hungry people waiting forever for food) and solved it with a guarantee that made them a Category of One.

At Guardian Business Coaching, we don’t just help you "do better." We help you find your version of that 30-minute guarantee. We help you find the gap in your market that everyone else is too lazy or too "professional" to fill.

Stop Being "Professional" and Start Being Profitable

There is a weird obsession in the business world with being "professional." Usually, "professional" is just code for "boring." It means using big words, wearing stiff suits, and hiding your personality behind a wall of corporate jargon.

If you want to dominate your market, you have to kill the boring. You have to be willing to take a stand. You have to be willing to say something that might even offend the people who aren't your ideal customers, just so the people who are your ideal customers can finally hear you.

In the world of profit acceleration, we look at 12 specific areas of your business where you’re bleeding money. One of the biggest leaks is almost always your marketing message. Most businesses spend a fortune on lead generation only to send those leads to a "me-too" website that says absolutely nothing of value.

How to Build Your MDP (The Billy Gene Style)

If you want to stop being a commodity, you need to follow a simple formula: Hook, Story, Offer.

  1. The Hook: You need something that stops the scroll. "We are the best" is not a hook. It’s a yawn. Your hook should address a massive pain point or make a bold promise.

  2. The Story: Why do you do what you do? Why should they trust you? This is where you inject personality. People don't buy from businesses; they buy from people.

  3. The Offer: This is the most important part. Your offer needs to be so good that they feel like an idiot saying no.

When we work with clients through our Profit Acceleration Software™, we don't just guess at what will work. We use data to find the path of least resistance to more revenue. We look for the "hidden profit" that is sitting right under your nose.

Finding $10k in 45 Minutes

Most business owners are convinced that the only way to grow is to get more "leads." They want more traffic, more clicks, more bodies in the door. But if your message is "I'm the best," more leads just means more people are going to ignore you.

I wrote a book called 45 Minute Business Breakthroughs because I wanted to prove that you don't need a massive marketing budget to see massive results. You need a better strategy.

45 Minute Business Breakthroughs book by Shawn Degan

We can sit down for 45 minutes and, using our proprietary assessment tools, find at least $10,000 in hidden profit in almost any business. We don't do it by reinventing the wheel; we do it by tightening the lug nuts on the wheels you already have. We look at your pricing, your upselling, your bundling, and: most importantly: your Market Dominating Position.

Are You Ready to Stand Out?

The market is crowded. The economy is shifting. The "Me-Too" businesses are going to be the first ones to go when things get tough. If you are tired of competing on price and you’re ready to actually own your category, it’s time to stop talking about "quality" and start talking about results.

Stop being the best. Start being the only.

If you’re ready to see how this works in real-time, I want to invite you to book a call with us. No fluff, no "professional" nonsense: just a straight-up look at your numbers and a roadmap to finding your MDP.

You can also check out our DIY Online Learning if you want to start diving into these concepts on your own time. But whatever you do, stop saying you’re the best.

Say it so they get it. Or don't say it at all.
